The Deep South Aftermath
Recap of the The Deep South Para Comi Con
Envy has a few more completed pages, but as mentioned before, I will be posting as updates rather than page by page. This update has a few more pages, but it is in the works!
Alright, I will be very candid off the bat, and I believe the event's contemporaries would agree. The turnout was disappointing. That is not to say the con was bad, and for the sake of only having to pay for driving, it was a net positive for me. For now, I’ll go over the differences, perks, and minuses as compared to last year’s experience.
The big difference this year is the date. Last year the con took place in August, and this year it was nearly one month later. Another difference is the leaning into horror. These two differences caused some different outcomes and the most crucial was the date.
I did attend the convention as a guest and that came with many financial bonuses. My booth has also been greatly improved over the last year and has much-added value. Even though the turn-out wasn’t great, I was able to surpass last years net gain.
The big problem, though, is that this event fell on the same weekend as several other events including a regional football game. I went to a few cons in the same season last year and the same thing happened with football decimating any kind of turn-out. This was just bad timing. Associating the con with horror also affects many people. Horror is a strange genre and brand here in the South. Highly regarded and yet still highly shunned. Keeping the gist of the con centered on the paranormal is a little more encompassing and also accurate.
The con was a success and it is always great to see old and new faces. It’s the perfect place to network and learn new things. I would say it’ll be better closer to the summer and embracing its paranormal roots. Looking ever forward to next year!
Best Regards,
